The Best OTC Eye Drops in Ireland
If you've walked into any Irish pharmacy lately, you've seen a wall of eye drops promising relief. Most of them help for about ten minutes. A few actually work. And one or two can quietly make dry eye worse.
This is what we recommend to patients at the Kerry Dry Eye Clinic in Tralee, and what we don't.
What to look for
- Preservative-free single-use vials if you use drops more than 4 times a day
- Sodium hyaluronate (0.1–0.3%) for lasting comfort
- No vasoconstrictors ("gets the red out" drops — they rebound worse)
Our shortlist
- Hycosan / Hylo-Forte — preservative-free hyaluronate, gentle enough for daily use
- Systane Hydration UD — good for computer users
- Thealoz Duo — for moderate dry eye, adds trehalose
When drops aren't enough
If you're reaching for drops more than 4–5 times a day, or waking up with gritty eyes, you likely have Meibomian Gland Dysfunction — the underlying cause in ~86% of dry eye cases. Drops can't fix that. IRPL treatment can.
